Certified Fairly Traded by either Transfair Canada or the Rainforest Alliance so you know growers, workers and their families are treated fairly. Certified Bird Friendly® so you know that habitat is preserved for our migratory songbirds and other wildlife.
As the only roaster in Canada offering certified Bird Friendly® coffee, we challenge other roasters, coffee drinkers, retailers, advocates, and especially consumers to raise the bar and look for this shade certification. In this global market, only Certification can provide certainty to consumers. Bird Friendly® certification provides:
Chain of Custody
Every handler of the coffee (the grower, the mill, the warehouses, the roaster and the packager) is a link in the chain and maintains records of inputs and outputs. This makes it possible to trace the source of every package of certified Bird Friendly® to an inspected farm.
Definition of Shade
The scientists at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center have done decades of research to define specific criteria for bird habitat and they perform ongoing training to inspectors to ensure the criteria are understood and applied correctly. It has been scientifically shown that light shade supports no more species than sun coffee.
Third Party Verification
As the second most traded commodity in the world (next to oil), and a globally traded product, there is a lot of opportunity and incentive to bend the truth. Third Party Verification ensures that we do not ask the monkey to be the guard over the peanuts! We’re only people after all.
In this complex world with various interests and label claims, third party certification is the only reliable tool for consumers and advocates to help in their purchasing decisions.
